Aquasystems - propeller concept analysis

Aquasystems is a specialist in aeration, mixing and decanting systems. With both R&D and production in house, there is a strong link between theory and practice. To gain insight in more complex technologies or to analyse the performance of specific propeller-basin cominations, Aquasystems frequently relies on CFD techniques.
For a new aeration concept, Zastrugi developed an advanced CFD model that had to cope with several challenging aspects, such as a rotating mesh for the propeller in a 2-phase environment (air and water).
A time dependent simulation was set up to assess flow & pressure patterns around the propeller. This provided crucial insight into the movement patterns relative to the propeller suface.
Integration of the pressure over the surface of the propeller shows the torque variations over time during system start up. Adding the rotational speed to the equation yielded an estimation for the required power to drive the propeller.
Images and animations of the water fraction versus the air fraction show the splash caused by the propeller. The promising behavior of the system led Aquasystems to prototype and test the new concept in real life.
